RUAHINE SCHOOL

The Best I Can Do, The Best I can Be!

Our Curriculum

Our Ruahine School Curriculum is aligned with the NEW ZEALAND CURRICULUM, and addresses the needs and interests of our students and community.

Our Curriculum has been developed through a comprehensive process of staff, student, Board of Trustee, and community consultation; to understand, CONNECT and  BRING ALIVE our Motto, Vision, Values, and our beliefs around the Practice and Purpose for Learning, significant to the Principles of the NZC.

INTEGRATED and AUTHENTIC APPROACH TO LEARNING

  • Wherever relevant and possible, learning is integrated within a real-life contextual approach (linked to our Big Idea/Theme or to an authentic event/context).
  • We recognise that this integration of Literacy and Numeracy is age and need specific; that is, we recognise that our children must first learn and understand the ‘code’ of Literacy and Numeracy to enable them to understand and apply these skills and strategies, to further access and respond to the wider curriculum.  For example: our children learn to read so that they can read to learn.

LEARNING THROUGH INQUIRY:

  • Informed by our 2 yearly cycle of ‘Big Ideas / Themes’ which ensure that the conceptual learning and understanding within the (NZC) curriculum strands of Social Sciences, Science, Technology, Health, and The Arts is experienced [at least] every second year.
  • Big ideas/themes for learning are further informed by student interest and voice, community links and engagement, authentic local or global issues.
