MATHEMATICS
Mathematics at Ruahine School is purposeful and engaging. Students explore a variety of concepts across the New Zealand Curriculum. Mathematical topics interconnect and this supports learners to make sense of mathematics.
As well as developing core knowledge, such as basic facts, we apply mathematics to real-life and problematic contexts. We provide opportunities for the children to discuss their ways of solving problems - there is not one correct way! This allows children to learn from each other and to reaffirm their own learning. Teachers and learners use 'talk moves' to facilitate discussions. Learners question, explain, justify, revoice, prompt and actively listen. Teachers and students provide wait time to allow others time to think.
Our teaching and learning of Mathematics focuses on:
Number and Algebra
Developing the students' basic facts knowledge
Learning a variety of problem solving strategies in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
Exploring patterns, relationships, equations and expressions
Geometry and Measurement
Creating and using appropriate units and devices to measure length, area, volume and capacity, weight (mass), turn (angle), temperature, and time
Sorting, grouping, identifying and describing 2D and 3D shapes
Exploring, describing and creating transformations (e.g., reflections, rotations, translations, enlargement)
Using and describing directions, maps, distances
Statistics
Conducting statistical investigations by gathering, sorting, and displaying data, and using the statistical enquiry cycle (problem, plan, data, analysis, conclusion)
Developing statistical literacy by comparing and evaluating different data displays
Investigating the probability of situations that involve elements of chance
How we support and extend our learners in their mathematics learning:
Differentiated teaching and learning programs
Learning Support Teacher working with small groups
'Spring into Maths' with teacher aides
'Fun Friday Maths' in Pounamu Team
Mathex; Otago Maths and Interschool Maths
